About Us
Kelvins love of cycling came from an early age, being introduced to road and track cycling at Secondary School. He fondly remembers these years spending every free minute from college, either being on the bike or at the local bike shops. Kelvin competed at the local level, with his highlight being taking part in the Tour of Southland. His love of the cycle world soon graduated, with Kelvin beginning an afterschool job in a local bike shop. With his love of this opportunity, it was a natural transition for Kelvin to head straight into the cycle industry when he was offered a fulltime position. A dream job for Kelvin, working with his love of bikes. Kelvin soon recognised his love and interest in cycle repairing and completed his master trade Cycle Mechanic qualification
In 1990 the opportunity to purchase the shop became a reality. We named our cycle shop “Kelvin’s Cycles”, directly after Kelvin, to represent the personal service that we want to provide to our customers. We saw Kelvin’s passion and interest in repairing bikes as our specialty, and our aim for the shop is to provide quality, expert, timely repairs to our customers.Kelvin’s mechanical expertise, was acknowledged when he was selected to mechanic for a variety of cycle teams within New Zealand. Kelvin was also selected to represent the New Zealand Track Cycling team at the World Cup in America, and the Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, which gave him valuable insight into being a mechanic in the competitive cycling scene.
We are independently, family owned and operated, and together with wonderful support from our wholesalers, select the cycles and accessories to stock that best suits our customer requirements. We pride ourselves on being honest and respectful to our customers, offering value, quality and expert cycle repairs. The cycle industry is forever changing, and over the last four years, we have seen the introduction of electric bikes into our cycle range. We stock the Pedego and the Smart Motion brand, with Smart Motion being the only fully New Zealand designed ebike. Anthony Clyde, the owner of Electric Bikes NZ Ltd, designed the bikes from the ground up, choosing every component to suit New Zealand conditions, and using the same industrial-grade drive system he developed for New Zealand post. Power assisted Bicycles feel and ride just like a normal bike, but come to a hill or wind, the rider pulls on the throttle and up you go. With power assisted cycling, the electric bike has become very popular. It allows more people to take part in the love of cycling.
At Kelvin’s Cycles our main bike brands that we concentrate on are Lapierre and Merida bikes. These bikes provide us with a large selection of cycles to match our customer needs. We stock a variety of specialist parts and accessories, and are also a Specialized parts and accessories dealer. In floor area, we are the smallest shop in Nelson, but we use this to our advantage. This means that we take time to select the best cycles and accessories to match to our valued customer. Kelvin and I always say “We may be small, but we are BIG on service”. We are highly focused on service to our customers, and using our knowledge to assist our customers.
